Before Independence in 1947, the old Grudwara of Bhera was located in the dead centre of Walled City Bhera , with its nine darwazas. Now it is Markazi Imam Bargah ( called Imam Kot by the locals ). This state – of – the – art building of its time was easily approachable from any direction. From the top of its tower, one can have an all – round observation miles away . On a clear day, the Salt Range can be seen, and at night, the lights of Khewra town are visible .
The administration of Imam Bargah is friendly, cooperative , and welcoming. They allow visitors of all faiths to the top of the minaret to have a good 360-degree view of Bhera. The building is well maintained , but its tower needs maintenance , particularly its stairs , which lead to the top. An inner or outer lift can be installed to reach the top for those who can not climb the stairs. Heard from elders , four big holes were kept closer to the top for the clocks facing all four directions – those were not placed , probably because of the Partition.
The lofty monument in the centre of Walled City Bhera can be converted into a big tourist attraction . Approaching from any flank , visitors can have a feel of the old town of Bhera … passing through its old darwazas , bazaars, narrow and intricate streets , old maris and hevalis, specialities and people of Bhera . A few pictures with a short video clip of old Grudawar , now Markazi Imam Bargah, are shared.
