Humans tried to live in groups for food, hunting, and security for thousands of years. Later, in settlements for agriculture and shelters. Mohalla is an Arabic word for a specific residential area of people belonging to a particular caste, tribe or profession. Word was used in Central Asia and then in the Subcontinent. Mohallas serve as the centres of communal life, where residents meet their neighbours and create meaningful connections with them, In other words, a group of houses or buildings that are socially and physically linked to one another and the availability of shared services.

The new Bhera was established by Sher Shah Suri on the left bank of the River Jhelum in 1540 AD. As I heard, the town was oval, with a wall and moat around it, and it had nine gates. The present-day Circular Road is the general alignment of the wall. Previously, most of the mohallas were inside the Circular Road, but with the increase in population after Independence, many have come up outside the Circular Road. There are several mohallas inside the Circular Road: large, medium, and small. There are five large mohallas, that is, Sahniawala, Khawajagan, Seithanwala ( Kalan ), Sheikhanwala, and Pirachgan.     Dear Zahid Sahib:

    Further to my email of the 24th of April, let me now get on to narrate what I know about the great Malik’s family. I may sometimes deviate from the subject, but it would have some bearing on it. The family had a lot of landed property and held high social status. Malik Tiklak Raj ji, I think, were three brothers. One of his brothers, Malik Suraj Kaul, whom only I had seen, was Hony. Magistrate of Bhera and had a great personality, so should have MalikTiak Raj ji and the third brother. Because of age and status difference, myself being only a student first at Bhera High School and then in college at Lahore, and they being on the high rung of status ( echelon ) and also because of our mohalla not been near their grand residence, there could not have been a direct contract, but certain sequences of events and circumstances led me to knowledge of their family. Though I never entered the Peeli Kothi of the Maliks, I did go close to the entrance to the Kothi from the street side, which we used to call Malkan Di Mori, adjacent to Sheikhanwala Mohalla. I think the main entrance to the Kothi was from the Circular Road as shown in picture NO. 495K and No. 446K as attachments to your email of the 15th of April. Another Malik family also lived on the said street just opposite the entrance to Peeli Kothi from the street side. That family’s daughter named “Chand Malik ” was a close friend and classmate of my elder sister ( 6 years older than me ) and both were toppers in their school. ( My sister also got married to a doctor in January 1941, the year your mother from Rawalpindi got married and moved to Bhera ). I accompanied my sister to the Malik family’s house a few times and thus came to know of Peeli Kothi nearby. Perhaps Mrs. Rommy Sahni might have heard of the Malik family at an early age.

    Before 1947, there was only one middle school for girls at Bhera, called ” Arya Putri Pathshala “, located about 100 yards/meters away from the origin of the street from the middle of the big area between outer and inner Ganjwala Darwazas and which led towards Chakwala Darwaza. Girls of Bhera generally used to study upto 8th class. It was perhaps for the first time in 1942 when three girls belonging to very influential families joined the 9th class of our school ( K.R.A.S. High School ), and they were ” Kamla” daughter of Malik Suraj Kaul, ” Swarna” d/o Diwan Inder Raj Sahni ( a very well-groomed rich person, who used to drive himself his personal Tanga with white horse ), and ” Mohini” d/o our Headmaster, Mr. Harivansh Lal Vohra. All three girls used to be seated at the front desk close to the teacher’s table and chair. We passed matriculation (High School ) in 1944. I as well as a few friends of mine moved for further study in college at Lahore. We used to spend all longer holidays, such as summer holidays, Dussehra holidays and Christmas holidays at Bhera.

    During those days, girls used to get married as soon as they attained the age of 16 to 20 years. As per Mrs. Rommy Sahni, her elder sister Santosh got married in 1945; surely it would have been a grand marriage in their family and a memorable event, where only men of high status would have been invited and even the most famous singer and actor of those times, late K.L.Sehgal, also attended. I believe within a few months or at the most within a year of the said marriage, another marriage took place in that family and it was that of Kamla daughter of Malik Suraj Kaul. Kamla got married to Mr. Jia Lal Sawhney, whose parents had vast lands at Salam and were highly respected in the community. Malik Suraj Kaul had a bungalow (kothi) near Govt. High School on the lawn of which a ” Mujra ” was held in celebration of the said wedding. I had a very close Sawhney friend ( a cousin of Jia Lal Sawhney ), who took me to the Mujra performance without then telling me his relationship with the groom; nor did he tell me who had been married to Jia Lal ji. Incidentally, he told me about the details of the said marriage sometime in the eighties when I casually talked about the event. After the marriage, Kamla ji moved to Salam near Phularwan and stayed there beyond 1947.

    We moved to Delhi in 1947 and had to struggle hard to establish ourselves in new environments. My brother, Gian Sarup, has well narrated this aspect of our lives in the Articles he wrote and which appear on the website ” www bhera.com”. My youngest brother, Rajinder Kumar, after completing of his studies and after working in an insurance company for a few years, moved to London in 1964. He was a kind-hearted, disciplined, hard-working and very social person. After a year or two of his stay in London, he had a large number of friends, both Hindu and Muslim. Soon he started organizing gatherings of his friends which grew bigger and bigger. At one such gathering, he met Mrs Karuna, who is the daughter of Kamla ji and Jia Lal Sawhney and married a Sindhi gentleman. Rajinder used to be extra friendly if any of his acquaintances turned out to be Bherochi or anyone related to Bhera. Soon he wrote to me ( I was then in Delhi ) about having met Karuna daughter of Kamla ji. I wrote back that if I was not mistaken, Karuna was the daughter of Kamla ji, who was onetime our class fellow at Bhera High School and I also expressed my compliments about her dignity. He told me about my response to Karuna and she in her turn passed on the same to her mother at Salam. Some times in the middle seventies, Rajinder visited India and after staying with us for some time, he expressed his desire to visit his birth town of Bhera. He first went to Lahore, met some relatives of Kamla ji there and then proceeded directly to Salam ( via Sargodha by bus ), where the Sawhneys treated him very warmly and provided him with a car with a driver for his visit to Bhera.

    Then in early 1978, Kamla ji visited India; she first went to Jagadhri and then came to Delhi, where she stayed with her close relatives in the posh area of Friends Colony or Maharani Bagh. Both myself and my wife went to meet her there. As our mother was then sick and old, Kamla ji came all the way, about 25 k.ms., to our house in Delhi to see our mother and paid her respects to her, true to the traditions of Bhera.

    Rajinder Kumar moved from the U.K. to the U.S.A. in 1985 and later Karuna with her husband also moved to California, U.S.A. Both families stayed in touch through telephone conversations. About ten years back, Rajinder and his wife (my sister-in-law) visited Karuna’s family in California, about 3000k.ms. from our town. Their contact continued till the untimely demise of my brother, Rajinder, more than two years back. He, however, did tell me sometime before his departure that Kamla ji had perhaps expired. If it is true, we pray to Merciful God to bless peace to her and Santosh ji’s souls. We also wish that descendants ( progenies ) of both the families of Maliks and Sawhneys flourish like their ancestors and have a good future

    جناب زاہد صاحب! محلّہ حکیماں والا بھیرہ کے قدیم ترین محلّوں میں سے ایک ہے۔ یہ چھوٹا سا محلّہ ، ‏محلّہ خواجگان، محلّہ شیخ پوریاں اور محلّہ مُفتیاں کے درمیان واقع ہے۔ اِس محلّے میں زیادہ گھر کشمیر سے ‏بھیرہ آنے والے مسلمانوں کی اولاد کے تھے۔ جن کی ذات تو مہتہ اور کپور تھی ، مگر یہ لوگ ‏بزرگوں کی طبابت کے باعث حکیم کہلاتے ہیں۔ کشمیر سے اِس خاندان کے لوگ مغلیہ ‏دارالحکومت دہلی جا کر بھی آباد ہوئے تھے۔ جن میں نام ور اُردو شاعر حکیم مومن خان مومنؔ کا ‏خاندان بھی شامل ہیں۔ محلّہ حکیماں والا کے خواجگان میں حکیم احسان اِلٰہی جو کہ ڈاکٹر احسان اِلٰہی ‏کے نام سے معروف تھے، آپ طبیہ کالج علی گڑھ کے گریجوئیٹ تھے۔ایلوپیتھک اور یونانی دونوں ‏طریقوں سے علاج کرتے تھے۔ آپ سلسلہ نقشبندیہ سے منسلک نہایت متقی آدمی تھے۔ اُن کے ‏بھائی بھی علیگ تھے۔ حکیم عبدالخالق مرحوم بھی بہت ہی خلیق اور خُدا ترس آدمی تھے۔ حکیم ‏حافظ مختار احمد بڑے زمین دار اور بھیرہ کے رئیس حکیم فضل اِلٰہی مہتہ کے داماد تھے۔ اِسی محلّے میں ‏لکڑی کی کنگھیاں بنانے والے کاری گر بھی رہتے تھے۔ جن میں ہزاروں حفاظ کے اُستاد حافظ فضل ‏اِلٰہی غیرمعمولی آدمی تھے۔ اُردو شاعر محمّد عظیم دردؔ بھی اِسی محلّے کے مکین تھے۔ جن کا کلام اُن کے ‏صاحب زادے ندیم انور صاحب کے پاس محفوظ ہے ، مگر ابھی شائع نہیں ہُوا۔بھیرہ کی پہچان ‏حضرت میراں صاحب رحمۃ اللہ انگہ (وادیِ سُون) سے جب بھیرہ تشریف لائے ، تو جناب کا اوّل ‏اوّل قیام اِسی مُحلّے کی مسجد حکیماں میں تھا۔ بعد میں آپ محلّہ پراچگان چلے گئے اور باقی زندگی وہیں ‏گزاری۔ جہاں اُن کا مزارِ پُرانوار آج بھی اہلِ دِل کا مرجع ہے۔

    زاہد صاحب! بہت شکریہ آپ اپنے اور میرے شہر سے محبت کے اظہار کے لیے اتنا تردّد کرتے ہیں۔ آپ کی یہ کاوشیں کبھی ‏رائیگاں نہیں جائیں گی۔ مُحلّہ مفتیاں کو بھیرہ کا سب سے چھوٹا مُحلّہ کہہ سکتے ہیں۔ یہ مُحلّہ مُفتی خاندان سے منسوب ہے۔ ‏جن کے بزرگ پرانے زمانوں میں مفتی رہے۔ اِس خاندان کے ایک بزرگ “شیخ بُڈھا” لگ بھگ پانچ سو سال پہلے بھیرہ میں ‏رہتے تھے۔ یہ خاندان نسلًا عثمانی قریشی ہے۔ جو خدمتِ دین اور حکمت (طبابت) سے منسلک رہا۔ ریٹائرد ہیڈ ماسٹر محکمہ ‏تعلیم حکومتِ پنجاب مفتی فضلِ جلیل مرحوم ساڑھے چار سو سال قدیم عظیم الشان خاندانی کتب خانے کے آخری خدمات گار ‏تھے۔ مفتی خاندان اُنیسویں صدی میں بھیرہ سے ایک اُردو اخبار “مفتاح الاِسرار” شائع کرتا تھا۔مفتی خاندان کے کتب خانے میں ‏ہزاروں نایاب قلمی کتابیں بھی تھیں۔ مفتی جلیل صاحب بے اولاد تھے۔ 1995ء میں آپ کی وفات کے بعد آپ کے بھانجے ‏رییاٹرڈ فیڈرل سیکرٹری (سی ایس پی)مفتی محمّد لطف اللہ صاحب نے یہ کتب خانہ حکومتِ پاکستان نیشنل آرکائیوز کو عطیہ ‏کر دیا تھا۔ جس کی وجہ سے یہ قیمتی اثاثہ ہمیشہ کے لیے محفوظ ہو گیا ہے۔ میں بیس سال پہلے جب ممتاز سکالر اور ‏مخطوطہ شناس پروفیسر ڈاکٹر عارف نوشاہی صاحب کو یہ ذخیرہ دکھانے کے لیے نیشنل آرکائیوز لے گیا ، تو وہ بہت متاثر ‏ہوئے۔ اُنھوں نے اِس کتب کے فارسی سیکشن کے مخطوطات پر ہزار صفحے کے تحقیقی و تعارفی کتاب لکھی ہے۔ جو ایران سے ‏شائع ہوئی اور جس پر اُنھیں ایرانی حکومت نے نیشنل ایوارڈ سے نوازا۔ مفتی فضلِ جلیل مرحوم کے والد مفتی فضلِ عظیم ‏بھی سکول ٹیچر تھے۔ ان کے گھر سے متصل دوسرا مکان مفتی عبدالرؤف مرحوم کا تھا، جو برٹش ریل وے میں آفیسر تھے۔ ‏اُن کے بیٹے مفتی عبدالشکور نےمسلم یونی ورسٹی علی گڑھ سے ایم اے انگلش کیا۔ آپ گورنمنٹ آفیسر تھے۔ یہاں تیسرا گھر ‏مفتی مُرید صاحب کا تھا، جو ایک سرکاری ملازم اور مفتی محمّد لطف اللہ صاحب کے والد تھے۔ دل چسپ بات یہ ہے کہ ‏پرانے سرکاری ریکارڈ میں مُحلّہ مفتیاں ، مُحلّہ شیخ پوریاں والا اور مُحلّہ حکیماں والا کے ناموں کو ایک دوسرے میں گڈمڈ ‏کر دیا جاتا ہے، گویا یہ ایک ہی محلّے کے نام ہیں۔

    خواجہ محمد سعید مہتہ مرحوم ، خواجہ ظہور احمدمہتہ مرحوم انہوں نےٹی بی ہسپتال، بچہ زچہ سنٹر عمارات ، مشینری اور فکسڈ ڈیپازٹ ہلال احمر ریڈ کراس کو عطیہ کیے۔
    خواجہ عبد السمیع مہتہ مرحوم نے ان عمارات کو دوبارہ بنوایا ۔ماڈل سکول میں اضافی کمرے بنواے ۔ ادویات فراہم کیں اپنا ذاتی سہ منزل مکان فری تعلیم براے بچوں بچیوں کیلئے وقف کیا کتب کاپیاں یونیفارم بیگ فری خواتین کیلئے فری سلائی سنٹر ،مستحق خواتین کو فری سلائی مشین فراہم کیں ۔شیخ پور کہنہ میں بھی ایک پرائمری فری تعلیم کیلئے سکول کا قیام کیا ۔کہنے آج بھیرہ کے بڑے چاچے مامے بن رہے ہیں جن کے بڑے اس وقت انتہائی کم درجہ پر تھے ان لوگوں نے بھیرہ کا خیال رکھا ۔

    محلہ خواجگان کی ایک نیک نام عبادت گزار اور سخی شخصیت۔ انہوں نے 1956 یا 1957 میں وفات پائی۔ کامیاب اور نیک نام تاجر۔ اللہ اور اس کے پیغمبر کے بتائے ہوئے راستے پر چلنے والے تھے
