Faculty members of COMSATS University, Islamabad, visited Old Bhera ( now called Ahmadabad/ Burrarian mounds ).

It was heartening that the faculty members of COMSATS University Islamabad visited the ancient site of Old Bhera, now known locally as Ahmadabad or the Burrarian mounds, on my request ( I accompanied them).

The original Bhera stood proudly on the right bank of the Jhelum River, opposite the present-day town. For centuries, it was a thriving settlement — a centre of trade, learning, and culture — strategically located along historic routes that connected Central Asia with the Indian subcontinent.

Today, however, Old Bhera has almost completely vanished. No standing walls, no visible structures remain to tell its story. What survives are only silent witnesses scattered across the soil — fragments of terracotta pottery, weathered stones, and faint traces beneath the earth. These remnants whisper of a once-living city that time, floods, and shifting river courses gradually erased.
