After seeing the pictures of the abandoned Bhera Railway Station, on the website, bhera.org, DS Railways, Karachi, Mr Ashfaq Ali Tabasam ( 0300 153 1975), has given his comments/suggestions to me. His letter is given on the website, bhera.org, under the Category, Railway. A fruit for thought for the senior citizens, local political leaders and administration of Bhera. Zahid Mumtaz

Sir,

The idea of developing the Bhera railway station has been discussed many times. It has huge potential for its proximity to the Motorway and an excellent midway stop on M2. Unless the local community comes up with a fundraising drive, I don’t think it can be realised. PR can step in but the local community will be the ultimate beneficiary so they must take responsibility. PR can only contribute by earmarking the railway land sharing the benefits of commercial development. Expecting PR to take the burden of developing tourism is a non-starter because this is not our core business. We can contribute by displaying some vintage rolling stock, a trolly ride and a small museum but its operational cost is also a question. If the community comes forward we can shift a vintage meter gauge steam engine from Mirpur Khas. I’ve been waiting to see some initiative for the last decade. But the story is the same as elsewhere, who takes the first step?

Ashfaq Ali Tabasam,
