Bhera’s Mercantile Heritage: Trade with Central Asia before the 1917 Revolution

Before the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, trade routes between the Indian subcontinent and Central Asia were active through caravan networks linking cities such as Bukhara, Samarkand, and Kashgar with Punjab and beyond. Merchants from towns like Bhera played an important role in this commerce.

As traders, the ancestors of Khawaja Zahid Nasim, from Bhera, imported fine paper silk fabric from the Central Asian states before the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917. ( Paper silk—lightweight, delicate, and smooth in texture—was prized for garments, turbans, and ceremonial attire ) .
