From Ruins to Playground
Abandoned Bhera Police Station (1870) for Government Islamia High School
The old Bhera Police Station, established in 1870, was inside the inner Ganjwala Darwaza ( Lahore Gate-1865) in Kacheri Bazaar. It was nestled between the Municipal Committee (1867) and the old building of Government High School, Bhera (1864). In 1927, the school relocated to a new building near Bhera Railway Station (1881).
The vacated building was converted into a boys’ hostel. In 1978, an intermediate college was established in the boys’ hostel building. It was later upgraded to a degree college in 2008. In 2011, the college moved to a new building on Bhera – Malakwal Road, near the abandoned railway station. The empty building was then allotted to Government Islamia High School, Bhera.
Currently, the area of the old police station lies vacant, with most building materials gone. Unfortunately, the space is being used for garbage disposal, causing unpleasant odours near the school.
It is suggested that till the time the place is used for some useful purpose by the Punjab Police Department or the local administration, it may be temporarily allotted to Government Islamia High School, Bhwra as a playground for the children. This would not only ensure the area’s cleanliness but also respect the historical significance of the old Bhera Police Station.
I hope the relevant authorities will consider my proposal, ensuring the space is utilized for the healthy activities of children. A few pictures of the old police station are shared below.
