Hand-Operated Cloth Ceiling Fan — Displayed at Information Centre and Mini Museum, Sher Shah Suri Jama Masjid (1540 AD), Bhera

The Information Centre and Mini Museum at Sher Shah Suri Jama Mosque (1540 AD), Bhera, displays a fascinating relic from pre-electricity days — a hand-operated ceiling fan made of cloth.

Before electricity became common, such fans were widely used in homes. They came in different sizes, were made of thick cloth, and were often decorated. The fan was manually operated with the help of a long rope running over a small wooden pulley. A person sitting nearby or in another room would pull the rope—sometimes by hand, and at times simply with the toe of a foot—causing the fan to swing gently and circulate air.

The younger generation, unfamiliar with these once-essential household items, may find this simple yet ingenious creation worth seeing during a visit to Jama Masjid,  Bhera.
