Preservation and Conservation of Bhera by the Archaeology Department of Punjab
The people of Bhera are delighted that, after a long time, their genuine demand for the preservation and conservation of Bhera’s significant monuments has finally been fulfilled by the Government of Punjab. The Archaeology Department of Punjab has now initiated this important work.
According to press reports, the initial phase will cover:
• Sher Shah Suri Jama Mosque (15 40 AD ), Bhera.
• Darwazas of Bhera (constructed on the old sites in 1865).
• Terminal Bhera Railway Station ( Colonial Era – 1881).
• Bauliwala Temple. In total, 11 temples have been identified in Bhera, and the oldest is believed to be the 500-year-old Jain Temple located in Mohalla Pir Azam Shah.
The importance of the historic town of Bhera has increased manyfold due to its proximity to the motorway. Once these conservation projects are completed, Bhera is likely to attract a greater number of tourists. This will promote domestic tourism and support the local economy. Visitors will surely enjoy the well-known specialities of Bhera, such as Pateesa, Phanian, Mehndi, Mathi, and Wariyan. It is also hoped that the traditional arts and crafts of Bhera—long dormant—may revive as well.
A comprehensive website on Bhera, bhera.org, is available for reference. It contains nearly 8,000 photographs, around 70 videos and documentaries, and numerous articles in both English and Urdu. ڈپٹی کمشنر نے بھیرہ میں جاری وال سٹی پراجیکٹ کے تحت تاریخی عمارات کی بحالی اور تزئین و آرائش کے کاموں کا موقع پر جا کر جائزہ لیا۔ متعلقہ افسران نے پیش رفت پر بریفنگ دی۔ ڈپٹی کمشنر نے ہدایت کی کہ تاریخی عمارات کی اصل شناخت اور ثقافتی اہمیت کو برقرار رکھتے ہوئے کام مکمل کیا جائے اور منصوبے کی بروقت تکمیل یقینی بنائی جائے۔

ڈپٹی کمشنر حسین احمد رضا چوہدری نے تحصیل بھیرہ کا تفصیلی دورہ کیا اور جاری ترقیاتی منصوبوں کا موقع پر جائزہ لیا۔ متعلقہ محکموں کے افسران بھی اس موقع پر موجود تھے۔ ڈپٹی کمشنر نے موضع وادھن میں حفاظتی پشتوں کی تعمیر و مضبوطی کے کام کا معائنہ کیا۔ ایکسین انہار اور ڈپٹی ڈائریکٹر ڈویلپمنٹ نے پراجیکٹ کے بارے میں بریفنگ دی۔ ڈی سی نے ہدایت کی کہ دریا کے کنارے آبادیوں کے تحفظ کو اولین ترجیح دی جائے، معیاری میٹریل کے استعمال کو یقینی بنایا جائے اور کام کی رفتار مزید تیز کی جائے۔ انہوں نے واضح کیا کہ ناقص تعمیر یا غیر ضروری تاخیر کسی صورت قبول نہیں کی جائے گی۔ موضع سردار پور نون میں جاری سڑک کی تعمیر کے منصوبے کا بھی جائزہ لیا گیا۔ ایکسین روڈز، ایس ڈی او ڈرینج، اسسٹنٹ کمشنر اور ریونیو ٹیم نے پیش رفت سے آگاہ کیا۔ ڈپٹی کمشنر نے ہدایت کی کہ منصوبہ مقررہ مدت میں مکمل کیا جائے، نکاسی آب کے نظام کو مؤثر بنایا جائے اور معیار پر کوئی سمجھوتہ نہ کیا جائے تاکہ عوام کو پائیدار سہولت میسر آ سکے۔ڈپٹی کمشنر نے بھیرہ میں جاری وال سٹی پراجیکٹ کا بھی معائنہ کیا اور تاریخی عمارات کی بحالی و تزئین و آرائش کے کاموں پر بریفنگ لی۔ انہوں نے ہدایت کی کہ تاریخی عمارات کی اصل شناخت اور ثقافتی اہمیت کو برقرار رکھتے ہوئے کام مکمل کیا جائے اور منصوبے کی بروقت تکمیل کو یقینی بنایا جائے۔انہوں نے پنجاب ڈویلپمنٹ پروگرام کے تحت جاری ترقیاتی سکیموں کی پیش رفت کا بھی تفصیلی جائزہ لیا اور فنڈز کے شفاف استعمال، باقاعدہ مانیٹرنگ اور بین المحکماتی رابطے کو مزید مؤثر بنانے کی ہدایت کی۔ ان کا کہنا تھا کہ عوامی مفاد کے منصوبوں میں غفلت یا کوتاہی برداشت نہیں کی جائے گی اور تمام اہداف مقررہ وقت کے اندر حاصل کیے جائیں۔ڈپٹی کمشنر حسین احمد رضا چوہدری نے نگہبان سہولت بازار کا بھی وزٹ کیا۔ انہوں نے اشیائے ضروریہ کی دستیابی، قیمتوں اور معیار کا جائزہ لیا اور متعلقہ افسران کو ہدایت کی کہ عوام کو ریلیف کی فراہمی یقینی بنائی جائے، سرکاری نرخ نامے نمایاں طور پر آویزاں کیے جائیں اور شکایات کے فوری ازالے کے لیے مؤثر نظام قائم رکھا جائے۔ انہوں نے کہا کہ رمضان المبارک میں عوامی سہولت اولین ترجیح ہے اور کسی قسم کی بدانتظامی برداشت نہیں کی جائے گی۔
Magnificient Punjab Heritage Revival Series, Episode 1
In the historic heart of Bhera’s Walled City, a new chapter of conservation begins. Under the strategic vision of the Tourism, Archaeology and Museums Department (TAM), restoration works are now underway across some of Bhera’s most significant heritage landmarks, including Kashmiri Gate, Lahori Gate, Sher Shah Suri Mosque, the Railway Station, and the Bauli Temple, supported by a dedicated allocation of Rs. 454.6 Million.
This initiative marks the commencement of a structured, evidence-based conservation programme aimed at stabilising historic fabric, preserving architectural authenticity, and enhancing site accessibility for visitors.
Through the Magnificient Punjab Heritage Series, TAM will document ongoing conservation interventions, share technical preservation practices, and highlight the evolving role of heritage assets in promoting eco-tourism and sustainable, culture-led economic growth across the Sargodha region.
