The train fare for the 28 km journey from Bhera to Malakwal was revised to Rs 10/- in early 2006 (previously Rs 7/-). I am still trying to trace the exact fare when the service first began operating between Bhera and Malakwal. At its peak, the train ran three times a day.
One of its main advantages was a generous luggage allowance—passengers could carry substantial baggage without extra charge—and a relaxed policy on children’s tickets, sometimes even allowing those above the official age limit to travel free.
Elders often recall a humorous incident at Bhera Railway Station. A woman leaving the station with her son, who appeared older than 12, was stopped by the Ticket Collector (TC) and asked to produce the boy’s ticket. She insisted he was underage. When the TC disagreed and pressed the issue, the well-built lady gave him a firm push and walked off, declaring in her typical Bherochi accent: ” I have given birth, not you!”
Sadly, after early 2006, train service between Bhera and Malakwal ceased entirely. Today, efforts are underway to establish the Bhera Railway Heritage Museum at the abandoned station (built in 1881). Some photographs and written accounts have been preserved and uploaded on the website bhera.org under the category Bhera Railway Station. The link is given below:
